Healthy Schools Scheme

This year the Healthy School Committee has continued with the theme of healthy eating and exercise, running many successful projects throughout the school year.
Colourful posters promoting healthy eating and physical health were designed to cover the halls of the school, written in both Irish and English with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of general health, culminating in Health Awareness Week.

During Health Awareness, Week 7th-11th March, our Head Girl, Catherine Gallagher, a member of the committee, spoke about a different health topics everyday over the intercom. Well done Catherine!
We also had a Healthy Options menu in the canteen which had a profound effect on students’ choice of diet.
On Tuesday the 8th of March, while promoting the importance of Calcium for teenagers, we held a day in which Donegal Creameries were kind enough to come in to the school and give out free dairy products such a ‘Rumblers’, glasses of yogurt, mini milk cartons and vouchers for new ‘Super Milk’.
We had a specialist from Boots in on the Wednesday to calculate students’ Body Mass Index (BMI) which tells whether a person is underweight, normal weight or overweight. She also checked student’s carbon monoxide levels.
Aoife Toner gave a demonstration of Zumba on the Thursday.
After-school classes such as Bums and Tums and Zumba have been a great success and will hopefully continue next year.

We are lucky to have enthusiastic members on the committee but none of it would have been possible without the huge amount of work done by our teachers on the committee; Ms. McGlynn, Ms. Hennigan, Ms. Bradley, Ms. Sweeney, Ms. Cummins, Ms. Condon, so a big thank you to all of them! We would like to acknowledge the contribution of Donegal Creameries (thanks to Ms.Deveney), Grace Mawn from Boots Chemist and Aoife Toner who gave a very entertaining Zumba demonstration during Health Awareness Week.
Many thanks also to Mrs. Kenny, our principal, for her permission and support, also to the rest of the student body and other members of staff who helped make our year a productive one once again.

Student Committee Members: Ellen Harte, Sarah Mc Glinchey, Sarah Mc Goohan, Eilís Doherty, Katie Toal, Breda Canning, Amy Callaghan , Niamh Cannon, Niamh Quinn, Caoimhe Mc Daid, Claire Kinsella and Catherine Gallagher.
