• To acts as a hub for the exchange of information
• Offer support and encouragement for groups and individuals.
• Provides a link between issues and campaigns
The TY Justice and Peace group have been very busy this year; this is a brief summary of their work.
They held a petition against Domestic abuse. Every student and teacher in the school made a copy of their hand and coloured it in and signed it. Then each hand was displayed in the lobby of the school, to show that the school was against “violence towards women” and men!
The group had a very successful “Breast Cancer Week”. They decorated the lobby in pink balloons and each SPHE class were given lessons on Breast Awareness. Leaflets were distributed and a pink cake sale was held in aid of Breast Cancer.
The group tried to encourage students in our school to look after their environment, by making clothes from recycled objects that they found around the school. They then held a ‘Recycle Fashion Show’ in the Lobby and Canteen and designed posters requesting students to keep our school tidy and to recycle their waste. They also created signs that said “No maids in our school – clean up after yourself”.
Aids awareness day was planned but unfortunately the snow stopped this event from happening.
A member of St. Vincent De Paul’s Youth Group came in to talk to our group and as a result the group is holding a SVP Fashion show in the school gym to promote SVP and to raise money. The group also hopes to have a “Homeless Aware night” where students will leave their cosy beds for the great outdoors and experience life without the mod cons.
Next year we hope to expand Justice and Peace to all years of the school by having a lunch time group organised.
Justice and Peace Loreto Letterkenny would like to thank everyone who supported our events during the year.
