On the 7th of April 2011 a group of athletic hopefuls set off to the ‘Loreto Secondary Schools Athletic Competition’ in Santry Hill, Dublin.
After a three and a half hour journey the first event of the day saw Rose Boyle come 2nd in the 80 metre hurdles .The next race of the day proceeded and Niamh Farrell continued the winning streak as she grabbed 2nd place also. In the 300 meters Catherine Boyle strode comfortably through her heat and took 2nd place in the final. The school had competitors in all age groups of the 200 meters. Eimear Walsh and Rose Boyle both won this event in the junior and minor age groups with ease.
Field events were run throughout the day and Loreto seized a few medals in these events. Tara Carr took first place in the minor high jump with a jump of 1m 30cm and Niamh Farrell managed to claim 2nd in the same age grou; Laura Kelly also claimed 3rd in the high jump. Maria Din took a well deserved 3rd place in the javelin. The school was represented with relay teams in all age groups. The junior relay team consisted of Eimear Walsh, Tara Carr, Sara Boyle and Niamh Farrell got through to their final but were unsuccessful in placing in the top three. The minor girls included Rose Boyle, Emma Horgan, Emma Kilcoyne and Catherine Doherty; this team were very unlucky as they got a respectable 4th in their final. The senior girls were struck with very bad news as two of their starting runners, Amy Kinsella and Demi Aberstone were unexpectedly injured. However Shauna Dwyer and Ciara Nolan stepped up to the plate and took on the roles in the relay team. The senior team consisted of Catherine Boyle, Lauren O’ Connell, Shauna Dwyer and Ciara Nolan and they ran a very good race but they did not place.
The competition is marked on points added from every event and the school placed fourth. The athletes could not have done so well with out the help of their three managers Mrs. Mc Ginley, Ms. Deveny and Maria Boyle. Well done to all those who took part in the competition as it was a very enjoyable day. The athletics team will also compete in the District schools in May.
