Senior Basketball

Senior Basketball
Team Captain: Rebecca McGrath.
Team: Roseanne Boyce, Catherine Boyle, Aisling Brennan, Claire Crumlish, Ciara Grant, Niamh Greeney, Kate Kenny, Charlotte Kiernan, Julie Fahy, Aoife Gallagher, Seafra Gallagher, Bronwyn Gillespie, Rebecca McGrath and Emer McMonagle.
Coach: Ms Deirdre Mannering.
Our senior basketball team had one of its best years to date. They are Regional Champions and successfully made it to the All Ireland Play-offs. (Quarter final stage)
5/11/10: Loreto Letterkenny 57 – St Catherine’s Killybegs 50
Our first game of the season was against old rivals, we knew it would be difficult. The teams were very evenly matched until the 3rd quarter. Killybegs started to show their fatigue and Loreto took control. A very good team performance. Top scorer was Catherine Boyle.
11/11/10: Loreto Letterkenny 60 – Abbey Vocational 42
Our 2nd match was against the newly promoted Abbey Vocational was very competitive up until the final quarter. Both teams lost players due to injury but Loreto had a stronger bench. A well earned victory. Top scorer on the day was Aisling Brennan.
16/12/10: Killybegs 41 – Loreto 40
The team travelled to Killybegs without our captain Rebecca McGrath or Kate Kenny and Emer Mc Monagle. Despite the weakened side the girls dug in deep and stayed in touch with Killybegs throughout. On this occasion the final result was not in our favour, we lost by a single point! Top scorer was Aisling Brennan.
11/1/11: Donegal Town 47 – Loreto Letterkenny 45
Our last group game was away to Donegal Town and it proved to be a very exciting game. In the beginning the girls played smoothly, calm and in control. We knew that Donegal Town would throw everything at us in the 2nd half and they clawed their way back into the game. The closing minutes were excruciating as the lead kept changing hands. Unfortunately for us we ended up losing by a single basket. This resulted in our team having to travel to St. Nathys in Ballinamore for the regional semi-finals. Top scorers Catherine Boyle and Ciara Grant.
13/1/11: St. Nathys 35 – Loreto Letterkenny 63
Having left early in the morning to travel to Ballinamore, we hoped to settle quickly into the game. The girls had a dream start with Ciara Grant excelling, especially in the 1st quarter. Everyone performed well, team spirit and support from the bench made a huge difference to our teams’ performance. The girls played some amazing basketball and were really impressive. Top scorer was Ciara Grant.

17/1/11: Loreto Letterkenny 46 – Abbey Vocational 45 (Regional Final)
The regional final took place in Ballyshannon and were delighted that the whole panel could be there. Once again we got off to a good start and at the end of the 1st quarter we were up 19-5. Donegal clawed back some of that lead in the 2nd quarter. The 3rd quarter proved stronger for the Abbey and going into the final 8 minutes we were up by a single point. That last quarter was full of drama with two of our starting players being fouled out. Thankfully, once again our bench responded and worked fearlessly to maintain that slim lead. At one stage we went down by 4 points but the girls did not give up and with 2 baskets from Kate Kenny, free throws sunk by Julie Fahy and our Captain Rebecca scoring her free throw under extreme pressure, Loreto won out in the end. Regional winners at last!

Having won the N.W Regional Final we proceeded to the Quarter Final Playoffs on Feb 12th. Having travelled to Belfast we encountered Castleblaney in the first game. This was a very strong, disciplined side and though in the 1st quarter we fought back to level the match, they eventually ran out comfortable winners. Our second game was against Methodist College (the host team). Having only had 20 minute break between the games the girls looked and felt tired. It was just one of those days, nothing went right. In all, it was a disappointing day but the girls are already planning to go one better next year. It only remains to say thank you to Ms. Mannering and best of luck to everyone in their end of year exams. Especially the Leaving Certs i.e. Rebecca McGrath, Charlotte Kiernan, Roseanne Boyce, Ciara Grant, Seafra Gallagher, Bronwyn Gillespie and Niamh Greaney.
