Senier All Ireland Champions
Tuesday the 22nd of March was the day the Loreto Letterkenny girls made history. It had been twenty years since the school last won a senior All-Ireland. It was an early start of 6am and a four hour bus journey that awaited us. We all had our pillows and i-pods to help make the journey more comfortable and Mrs Kenny’s inspirational speech calmed the nerves. We stopped half-way to get some breakfast and then the whole way down the M1, everyone was completely focused on the game. We were all nervous yet excited while trying to put some of those negative thoughts to the back of our minds. Finally we had arrived! Tolka Park, the home ground of Shelbourne F.C The pitch was like a carpet and the stadium was just amazing. We all had a walk around the pitch and took some photos. I must say we all looked very professional in our lovely hoodies, kindly sponsored by B-Bobs (Alice Diver’s mum) Then it was off to the dressing rooms to get ready. We had been given a kit by the FAI but couldn’t wear it on the day as the colours clashed with the kit of Eureka Kells. Then it was off to do the warm-up and every girl had nothing else on her mind but the game. Some girls had been waiting six years for this and we knew we weren’t going home without that title. Then we walked out of the tunnel and our fabulous supporters cheering us on, it was our time to shine. Our opponents had not had a goal scored against them all year so the pressure was on but thanks to Geraldine Mc Laughlin the day was ours. The moment the final whistle blew was the happiest moment of our life. The whole way home the bus was mental, everyone was singing and Charlie, the bus driver, even bought us all ice-cream! The home-coming was amazing, a Garda escort brought us up the main street and the entire school was decorated in flags and banners. The next day we had an assembly in front of the whole school (embarrassing!) and we all got to wear our hoodies so we were easily spotted! It was all over the newspapers about our success and the fact that it had been twenty years since the school last won the All-Ireland. The opponents twenty years ago were also Eureka Kells, the same as ours. The score was 2-1, the same as ours and all the goals were scored in the first half, the same as ours…..FREAKY! Finally, I would like to say a special Thank you to Ms. Carr and Ms. Duffy for all the work they put in all year, it finally paid off. Ohh yeah and just one more thing “I just can’t get enough…..Aw Yeah!” By Kaneshia McKinney and Sadhbha Medlar
